The unkindness
A Baltimore Raven fan blog.
In the last few years I've heard a lot of talk about defences being in nickel formations on average 60% of the time. So I wanted to look at what that meant for the Ravens defence. The simplest definition of nickel is any formation with 5 defensive backs. The base formation being a 4 defensive backs formation. I used this as my basis to analyse the defence.
I used the game against the Buffalo Bills in week 1 of the 2016 season for my examples below. I looked for examples when there were 5 or more defensive backs on the field. Interestingly I saw no examples of more than five defensive backs used. I saw 2 main formations the Ravens used when they had 5 defensive backs on the field. A 3rd was a variation used on 5 snaps. And lastly a formation used just once. I'll work through the main two first.
